Description
This regal and ornate doré bronze chandelier, done in the neoclassical style, heavily features elements of classical antiquity, especially the ram motifs. Rams hold lots of symbolism, however, in this particular piece, they are a symbol of power and nobility. The rams on the chandelier are incredibly detailed. Note the texturized effect of the exquisite castings of hair and horns on the ram’s foreheads.
Accompanying the rams, are elegantly arranged acanthus leaves. The combination of rams and acanthus leaves speak to France’s rich history of conquest and power. Acanthus leaves remind us of the glory of the Greek and Roman empire that the rest of Europe hoped to emulate. These beloved leaves are generously spread throughout the base and arms of the fixture.
Like a theatre curtain, a draping cloth with fringe hangs off the columns to set the stage for the story suggested by this spectacular fixture. The bottom bowl has a wreath with ribbons. Wreaths and ribbons were worn as crowns by triumphant rulers. Effectively, the rich story told by this floating sculpture makes us forget its function of illumination. All in all, this one-of-a-kind pendant light would make striking accent light in a foyer, office, or study that demands an element of magnificence!
