Description

This is a finely carved 1760 English George III armchair. The George III period was named after the English monarch of the time. It was popular among the elite and mercantile class of people, due to its excellent material and intricate carvings. Due to the multiple King Georges, each George developed its own look. The George III period is also referred to as the Chippendale style. This period was often characterized by drawing on both the Rococo and Gothic styles. Pieces sported curves, arches, Chinese influences, and cabriole legs. This chair has been entirely carved out of mahogany; a premiere wood choice known for its durability, longevity, and rich coloring. The back has an elegant splat, a principal element of eighteenth-century English chairs. Splats are the center support for a chair’s open back and originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs. This spat is pierced and variform with the allusion to long-stemmed flowers. It mimics Plate XVI, a chair designed by Thomas Chippendale, the legendary English furniture maker. The top rail is serpentine shaped and ends in scrolls while the back posts are shaped. Each arm reflects the back, being shaped and ending in scrolls. It sits on four square legs that are chamfered and connected by stretchers. It has a seat cushion, which has been expertly upholstered by designer Stephanie Sarris. This patterned fabric reminded Stephanie of weaving. Made from viscose rayon, polyester, and cotton, it is incredibly durable. Created by Pindler, renowned for their quality, in a ‘Rainbow’ pattern. The multiple woven colors have been meticulously done, making this upholstery lush. We were drawn to this pattern because of the unique weave pattern, which reminded us of artistically woven baskets and rugs that were used during the time. There is a wide range of colors, touching reds, blues, and yellows. This multitude of colors allows the chair to be paired in a plethora of settings with different color schemes.
