Description

This pair of mid-19th Century French Louis XVI giltwood bergère armchairs are versatile, classic, and comfortable. During the second half of the 18th century, French furniture underwent a neoclassical revision away from the twirled, freehand designs of Rococo and instead included classical Greek motifs such as the straight-turned chair legs resembling columns, the undulating ribbon, and flower carvings throughout the frame. The slightly winged-out shaped back is like the winged-back armchairs, or fireside chairs, created to help shield a person from drafts of chilly air and to trap the heat from a fireplace. The fireside chair design, along with the other elements of this chair makes it comfortable and cozy whether pulled up next to a fireplace or not.

Designer Stephanie Sarris wanted to emphasize and exaggerate the silhouettes of these elegant gilt bergères. Stephanie loved the original color and pattern choice, however, she wanted to give them a modern and fresh update. Keeping with the original floral design, the chair was upholstered with a cotton and viscose patterned fabric. This fabric is called ‘Desire’ by Jessica Zoob for Romo Black Edition Collection in ‘Pleasure Gardens Velvet Bloom.’ The digital print was adapted from a painting featuring lotus flowers inspired by the designer’s travels.

To bring out the red and pink flowers, Fabricuts’s double-rubbed Bellagio Pattern in Rouge (137) was added to the seat. A green welt of Jane Churchill’s ‘Mali Leaf Green’, reminiscent of the equally vibrant green leaves that garnish these passionate flowers, was added to pull the composition together. The marriage of the Asian art motif and the French features of the frame resulted in a transformation of the chairs into modern-day chinoiserie. These fascinating chairs are sure to add a touch of timeless exoticism to any room.
