Description

This Circa 1940 Italian Parchment furniture set may be used as either a sideboard with side tables for a dining area or a chest of drawers with nightstands for a modern bedroom.

One of the small cabinets has a one-door compartment with a shelf. The other small cabinet has three parchment veneered drawers. The large piece combines the one-door compartment with two shelves and a four-drawer design. Hence, this unique mixture of beech and parchment result in an exceptional Midcentury design.

Parchment is thin animal skin used to veneer furniture. The skin for parchment typically comes from sheep, calf, goat, or boar. However, it can be from other animals. Used since antiquity, it made a resurgence during the art deco period, as many furniture designers looked to the exotic for inspiration.

Condition

MAIN PIECE: The door of the main piece closes nicely. It comes with a key; however, it only works as a pull, old European lock does not work. The four drawers have no damage or repairs. However, the second and bottom drawers slightly pull the above drawers, when sliding out. It is our opinion this is due to changes in the wood over time. Furthermore, the top drawer has inconspicuous blemishes on the parchment that blend well with the hair fibers and texture of the parchment skin (see images). There are nicks, scratches, and tiny stains from age and use, but still in excellent condition. The two close-up images of the veneer are of the top.

SMALL CABINETS: The cabinet with drawers has a glitch with the bottom drawer sticking a little when pulling out the drawer but it goes back in place.

The cabinet with the door has a scratch on the bottom left, from the door. See images. Possibly from expansion in the wood caused by changes in temperature and humidity.

BACKS: Unfinished.

We will be happy to provide additional close-up images upon request.
