Description

A large Circa 1920 French Nickel on Bronze Two-Tier Twenty Light Alabaster Chandelier. This majestic chandelier has wonderful nickel-plated bronze castings that begin with a key design, at the top, that goes into a baluster form. The top-level has five cornucopia scroll arms holding dreamy alabaster shades. As you graduate downward, the chandelier has flowing bronze strands cinched with rosette centers that introduce the carved bronze center band trimming the center alabaster bowl. The second level of ten cornucopia scroll arms hold alabaster shades. All the cornucopia scroll arms have an acanthus-leaf motif. The light beige hand-carved alabaster has lots of natural veining throughout. The central bronze center band features cartouches of pairs of swans and a central fountain. The swan motif is related to light, grace, and beauty. The fountain represents energy, the eternity of pouring into the field of time.

Weighs 160 lbs and may require ceiling reinforcement.

Condition

The chandelier has been rewired to meet US electrical standards. It takes 20 base light bulbs. Each light bulb can use up to a max of 60 watts. We recommend using LED lights because they help preserve antique fixtures better and longer. Antique chandeliers might have to be adapted to modern houses. This chandelier uses a canopy and chain which is not included. Please check with your electrician or contractor for additional specifics on installing antique chandeliers. Being 160 lbs., the ceiling may require ceiling reinforcement.

The wear on the nickel and the generous accumulation of patina gives the bronze a richer, unique look. The alabaster is a creamy beige with natural veining. The hand-cut shades are in good condition. The large alabaster shade has two old professional repairs that blend well with the veining. This large shade, however, does not fully sit perfectly in the circular frame of the chandelier due to how the frame was mold-made and hand cast and the alabaster done by a stone sculptor. So, a part of the alabaster dome does not align with the frame, and you will see the top rim of the alabaster slightly showing. However, due to the center decorative finial, the large alabaster dome is secure. We recommend that it is packed dismantled with the alabaster packed separately. When reassembling, we recommend that it is not screwed on with force as that might crack the large alabaster dome. All in all, it is in good condition for its age. We will be happy to provide further close-up images upon request.
