Description

This exquisite milk and honey-colored Murano glass chandelier showcases a mastery of Venetian glass craftsmanship. Features a bulbous center column with sprouting details, stylized here with daffodils and leaves, and five scroll arms that hold bobeches with petal-shaped rims protruding from the internal metal support. When illuminated, the handcrafted chandelier acts as a striking floral centerpiece. The piece is rich with details, including scroll stems, lattice surface designs, rigaree trim, and a hanging center finial; exhibiting a masterful flair in glass craftsmanship.

The glass houses on the island of Murano are famous for highly ornamented glass chandeliers created by the inflation of molten glass followed by cutting, pincering, and other rapidly executed decorations and details. This piece was created using a combination of Lattimo glass and colored glass. Lattimo, Italian for “milky,” refers to the layers of slightly opaque white glass. The opacity and color are provided by the presence of microcrystals dispersed in the glass matrix that are separated when the molten glass is cooled down. The caramel-colored glass is achieved by adding selected metal oxides to the silica during melting. To achieve these glass variants, an incredible amount of accuracy is required in terms of proportions and timing. The style of this piece is a pared-down interpretation of the ‘Ca’Rezzonico’ style of chandeliers created by Giuseppe Briati in the 18th century. The ‘Ca’Rezzonico’ style is named for the Venetian palace, today a public museum dedicated to 18th century Venice, where Briati’s initial masterpiece resides. Both the colors and stylings of this piece return to notions of decadence and extravagance.

The combination of lattimo glass and caramel colors creates a splendid play of light and texture across this piece, reminiscent of a decadent crème brûlée. This chandelier demonstrates a delicate Baroque-style design still loved by many, elevating any interior with a touch of natural beauty.
