Description

This George III kneehole desk has a shelf that is held up by bronze shelf supports in the shape of acanthus scrolls. The upper gallery has a beautifully detailed bellflower bronze trim. The mercury glass panel was added to reflect the glow of the candlelight when making use of the desk at night. The writing surface has a nice gold-tooled green leather top. The desk has sets of drawers on either side with lovely turned wooden pulls. The top of the shelf makes the desk 42 in. tall, although the writing surface is only 29 inches tall.

Condition

The desk is veneered in mahogany. The drawers are lined in poplar and have nice turned pulls. The original green leather is crackled consistent with wear (see image). The mercury glass is spotted in different areas from oxidation and age (see image). However, there are no cracks or scratches on the glass. Minuscule scratches consistent with the wear of over 200 years are on the outer side panels, bottom crown molding, and the corners of the drawers. The desk dismantles in three parts.
