Description

This striking, circa 1940, French late Art Deco / Modernist writing desk features a mahogany‑veneered top with a cross‑banded border, the veneer laid in a book‑matched, figured pattern finished in a rich, dark mahogany tone. The exotic surface is a highly figured mahogany veneer with a subtle mottled / crotch‑figure character, giving the top a sophisticated, almost quilted appearance that catches the light beautifully, and is further enhanced by solid mahogany drawer linings rather than secondary softwood.

As was typical of quality European Art Deco cabinetmaking, the solid carcass was first assembled and mechanically fastened with countersunk nails, then veneered over. The small circular marks visible on the top and sides correspond to the positions of these original fixing pegs or nail heads beneath the veneer. Over time, natural movement in the timber has allowed these fasteners to telegraph faintly through the surface. They are considered part of the original construction and patina of the piece and are not repairs.

Historically, late Art Deco French workshops frequently selected Cuban, African, and other dense, exotic mahoganies for their most refined furniture, choosing highly figured veneer leaves for visual impact. The tight, fine-grain, and subtle quilted/mottled pattern on this desk is consistent with that practice and underscores the quality and rarity of the timber used. The design sits comfortably in the refined, modern tradition of leading French decorators of the period. It is very much in the taste of houses such as Jules Leleu and the Maison Dominique, without being formally attributable to a specific maker.

The richly toned, figured mahogany is elegantly contrasted by a chromed‑steel U form base. It has no pitting or rust, giving the desk a classic Art Deco silhouette that reads as both luxurious and modern. This piece will appeal to collectors of French Art Deco furniture, admirers of exotic mahogany veneer, and anyone seeking a statement writing desk with authentic period craftsmanship and presence.

Condition

Solid carcass traditionally constructed with countersunk nails and subsequently veneered. With age and minor movement in the timber, the positions of these original fasteners now telegraph faintly through the veneer; these are inherent to the original construction and are not repairs.

The top is veneered with finely figured, interlocked mahogany veneer showing subtle mottling and a warm reddish‑brown cast, framed by a straight‑grained mahogany, cross‑banded border. The tight texture and characteristic sheen are consistent with dark‑stained mahogany.

Typical scattered nicks, surface scratches, and minor finish wear consistent with age and use. Lock in working order.
