Description

The George III style produced exceptional quality pieces that many collectors have deemed the finest examples of furniture design. During this time Georgian furniture makers preferred mahogany over walnut, making it the main wood of choice. This table is carved entirely from mahogany, which gives it its natural deep mocha coloring as well as its exceptional durability. The top is crafted in a half-moon shape, called ‘demilune.’ These tables were popular during the time, acting as an accent table or substituting for a console table.

This finely crafted Circa 1790-1820 Georgian demilune metamorphic game table with delicate classic esthetic and elegant proportions has a simple table skirt set on slender cabriole legs, terminating in pad feet. It is made entirely of mahogany and has a mahogany veneer.

However, despite its simple design, this piece is intricately crafted with thoughtful, recursive detail to serve multiple functions: as a demilune console table against a wall, a luxurious round tea table, a stunning card game table, and a work desk with storage for a quill and two ink wells.

To transform the demilune into a tea table, game table, or work table with a storage area, the gateleg needs to be positioned perpendicular to the front of the demilune, the brass escutcheon serves as a steering marker to position the gateleg. Two red felt-covered wooden brackets inside the gateleg compartment base need to be taken out and positioned vertically before lowering the leaf that corresponds to the desired tabletop. Only one bracket is utilized at a time and the other is put back into its compartment.

To transform the console into a tea table, the longer bracket is placed in a vertical 90-degree position and the top demilune leaf is lowered (see image). There is a slight gap between the two demilune leaves which is normal due to its age.

The second conversion occurs when the shorter bracket is raised vertically forming 45 degrees to the base. A wooden square brace kept in the storage compartment is added to the base of the gateleg (see image) for additional support. Now the first and second leaves can be lowered together to reveal a game table with a gold embossed trim around a beautifully weathered green leather tabletop and four drinks/chip trays spaced evenly on the edges.

For the third conversion, no bracket or brace is utilized (see image). You lower the three leaves together, flush, onto the base of the gateleg to reveal a green felt work area with adjacent storage compartments for two ink wells and a pen.

The table has been restored by a professional conservator to optimal condition for its age and is ready to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Condition

Light nicks, scratches, and slight shrinkage from age. There are some chips on the edges near the hinges where the table leaves flip (see images) from incorrectly flipping the table leaves without putting the gateleg and/or brackets out first for support and/or not flipping each leaf out at a time.

The two wooden brackets, covered in red felt, that are kept in the gateleg, and taken out to hold the table leaves, have been replaced. The square-shaped brace was added later to extend the life of the shorter brace and add support. The red felt was added to prevent scratches and wear to the magnificent mahogany top. There is some shrinkage to the veneer but it is intact. The old European lock does not work.

To prevent damage, it is important to take out the leaves and put them back systematically. The restorer added a wooden brace to help with the weight of the two leaves when in its is in game table position. This is not original to the piece. No brace or bracket is used for the worktable option.

The bottom of the storage base has separation but is intact which happens with age. There are signs of slight woodworm but the woodworm has been professionally eradicated. The table has been examined by a professional conservator who reglued parts of the veneer, tightened the hinges, and replaced the brackets that hold the leaves. Recently waxed.
