Early 19th Century English Regency Octagonal Drum Table with Tooled Leather Top

$13,500.00

Description

This exceptional mahogany drum table is a quintessential example of Regency design, a style that emerged in the late 18th century and flourished during the early 19th century. Named for its resemblance to a drum, this table features an uncommon octagonal surface—a sophisticated variation on the more typical round form—crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneer. The table’s rich, reddish-brown hue and straight grain are beautifully offset by the lush green leather top, which is meticulously tooled with an elegant gold trim, adding a touch of refinement.

As is characteristic of Regency drum tables, this piece is fitted with eight drawers, four of which are functional while the other four are “dummy drawers,” designed to maintain perfect symmetry. The drawers are adorned with circular brass knobs featuring intricate floral backplates and escutcheons, showcasing the attention to detail that defines Regency craftsmanship.

The table rests on a central pedestal base, supported by four gracefully splayed legs, each embellished with Grecian-inspired scrollwork. The legs terminate in brass-capped paw feet on casters, seamlessly combining neoclassical elegance with practicality. This design not only provides stability but also allows for easy access to the drawers, making it as functional as it is visually striking.

The Regency era (1811–1820), named after the Prince Regent who later became King George IV, was one of the most innovative and influential periods in the history of furniture and architectural design. Fueled by the rapid industrialization of the West and inspired by classical antiquity, this era embraced neoclassical motifs, fine materials, and exquisite craftsmanship, all of which are exemplified by this remarkable drum table.

In modern interiors, this versatile table could serve as a sophisticated centerpiece in a library, study, or home office, offering both storage and timeless elegance. Its enduring design also makes it an excellent choice for an entryway or as a statement piece in a living room, where it can seamlessly complement both traditional and contemporary décor.
