Description
This is an exquisite pair of French Mid-19th Century Louis XV Style Bergères. The style was a direct response to the previous Louis XIV style, which valued furniture that emanated power and masculinity. Louis XV-style furniture was daintier and more feminine. It was named after the French monarch and pieces were thoughtfully designed for the small intimate salons in the Palace of Versailles. During this period, bergères became popular. They were a type of upholstered armchair designed for lounging and comfort.
Today, stately homes, such as the White House, have them. These bergères have a hand-carved frame from beech wood. This type of wood is excellent for structural woodwork and wears well, making it the perfect material for indoor furniture. The back center crest is trimmed with dainty floral ornaments in the middle. Flowers were quite popular during the time and appeared on every Louis XV item. This floral decoration matches the cabriole legs and scroll feet. The knees of the legs feature a similar leaf and floral design. Meanwhile, the curves of the petals are matched with the serpentine-like curve of the apron. Designed with comfort and luxury in mind, the bergères have a splendid silhouette.
To enhance these elements, designer Stephanie Sarris added a beautiful abstract print for the back of the chair. It is from the Romo Group’s Otelie collection in ‘Orrin Kingfisher.’ Blue colors evoke feelings of calmness or serenity. The print is reminiscent of water droplets, with cobalt and navy blues. Carolina blue and sapphire blue make up different droplets. It brings about a sense of tranquility and the soft plain velvety texture brings about warmth. To add another element of luxury to this elegant chair, Stephanie upholstered the seat with a gold, full pile velvet with a subtle pattern inspired by ammonites. It is from the design house of Jane Churchill in ‘Lazurite gold.’ Ammonites were a group of extinct marine animals who have mesmerizing swirl shells. The combination of natural elements in both the frame and fabric makes this a cohesive and elegant pair of armchairs. Its updated color palette also lends them beautifully to any lounge area like living rooms, bedrooms, or sunrooms.
