Description

This is an ornamental hand-painted cheval mirror done in the Rococo style. Over time, the original paint has acquired a rich patina that enhances the painted flowers and trimmings on the carvings.

The abundance of curves and flowers cannot help but make the eye wander and notice the delicate details, such as the lovely hand-carved rosettes and scrolling curves of the leaves.

On the back of the mirror, you see a centered grotesque face biting a classic ribbon bow of blooming flower vines. On the bottom, on each side, are faces, holding the ends of a garland of flowers. All this on, cabriole legs.

Condition

All the carvings on the frame are complete and not chipped or broken. However, the paint on the mirror is chipped and scratched throughout and has picked up a rich patina, all from age. The feet have scratches due to time and living conditions. The sections in the mirror show that the wood has gone through fluctuations in temperature and humidity over time. The back of the frame is warped and cracked due to the conditions mentioned. The paint on the frame has faded but is still rich in color. The mirror has no oxidation which suggests it has been replaced at a later time. We will be happy to provide additional images upon request. This item will require special handling due to the fragile nature of the paint and carvings.
