Description
Pair of circa 1870 French Régence / Louis XIV–XV Revival hand‑carved solid walnut armchairs. Monumental in scale and presence, these throne‑like fauteuils have tall, generously proportioned backs and deep, comfortable seats that immediately command attention in a room. Each chair is exceptionally heavy and substantial, a testament to its solid walnut construction and quality 19th‑century craftsmanship.
Inspired by the grand fauteuils found in 18th‑century French châteaux and the historic state rooms of palaces such as Versailles, these armchairs embody the opulence and ceremony of the French Ancien Régime, reinterpreted in the Second Empire / Third Republic period. Cabinetmakers and patrons of the time consciously revived Régence and early Louis XV models to celebrate France’s royal past and the great 18th‑century ébénistes.
The frames are richly and crisply carved with interlaced foliage, scrolling acanthus, shells, and cartouches, all characteristic of Régence and early Louis XV design. The carving is deep and intricate throughout, from the crest rails and uprights to the arm supports, seat rails, and legs, giving the chairs a sculptural quality.
As masterful works of functional art, they are upholstered in a heavy woven tapestry fabric with an Aubusson‑inspired foliage pattern of branches and leaves, echoing the carved motifs and adding warmth, color, and texture. The tapestry upholstery is in good condition, with only light, age‑appropriate wear and no noticeable stains, tears, or losses.
Perfect as statement pieces in a living room, library, study, great room, or dramatic entry, they bring a distinct sense of historical grandeur and a hint of Versailles to any interior—equally at home in a traditional, maximalist, or layered eclectic setting. Ideal for collectors and decorators who appreciate 19th‑century French revival furniture, château style, and period design with presence.
