Description

A fine late Regency flame mahogany chamber cabinet, English circa 1865, featuring two short drawers over a double‑door cupboard, raised on elegant turned legs. Crafted of richly figured flame mahogany with a warm, well‑patinated surface, the cabinet retains excellent character and depth of color throughout.

Once serving as a chamber cabinet—a refined washstand designed for a gentleman’s or lady’s dressing room—it exemplifies the discreet elegance and functional craftsmanship of mid‑nineteenth‑century English furniture. The brass oval pulls, later replacements, harmonize with the cabinet’s original joinery, gallery top, and carcass, all of which remain intact.

Age‑related shrinkage cracks and surface wear attest to its authentic nineteenth‑century craftsmanship, giving the piece the kind of mellow patina that only time can produce. Versatile in both scale and design, this cabinet would serve beautifully as a side cupboard, writing desk, or bedside table, bringing understated Regency sophistication to any interior.

Condition

Overall, structurally sound with expected wear and age-related surface irregularities. Separation and shrinkage cracks are visible throughout, including on the front doors (both exterior and interior panels), the side panels, and the rear. The veneer shows age splits consistent with temperature fluctuations over time. Retains an attractive period patina throughout.

The top surface has scattered scratches and small areas of wax residue. The gallery itself has a crack on the left side and separation at the right joint where the pins enter the main case. The underside shows faint white staining.

The drawers are in good working order and structurally sound. The four turned legs remain stable and free from structural cracks or visible repairs. The back panel has two stable splits.

Brass pulls are later additions in a period-appropriate design, present when acquired, and suit the piece well.
