The pin closure is in good working order. The bezel and frame are made from gold, but the actual pin is not. The pin sticks out on the right edge to accommodate the thick fabrics of the gown used during the period. The patina on the gold highlights the chased flower and leaf patterns delightfully. The gold is pinchbeck which was not uncommon during that time period. The mount has lovely chasing and repoussé scrollwork. The rim holding the hardstone has some microscopic fractures from the original hammering. The rim holding the hardstone is also connected to the mount frame by four hinged pins.

The sardonyx is in one piece but cut in three layers. Being hand carved makes this cameo unique and one of a kind. The stone has microscopic hairlines fractures due to their age or often by origin. It also has two very tiny chips. These stress lines and tiny chips are acceptable for antique gemstone cameos. We will be happy to provide more closeup images upon request.
