Description
This Early 19th Century English Regency Greek Revival Calamander and Jasperware Cabinet with Ivory Stringing is a testament to the era’s dedication to craftsmanship and historical reverence. Unlike prior periods, Regency designers often sought to incorporate motifs of ancient gods and utilize various woods and finishes. Furniture from this period was typically shorter, allowing for the display of paintings above and more treasures on the surfaces.
This cabinet, carved entirely from rare calamander wood, exemplifies these principles. Calamander, an exotic and expensive wood, was usually reserved for small items like jewelry boxes. Over time, the wood became nearly extinct, making pieces of this size exceptionally rare. The rich brown coloring of the calamander contrasts beautifully with the ivory inlay, enhancing its visual appeal.
The cabinet features plain lines that highlight its decorative elements without distraction. At the back of the top, a small rail includes a centered octagonal jasperware panel, a type of pottery known for its unglazed matte finish and blue color, created in 1770. Hand-carved miniature Colchester balusters beneath the rail mimic the urn-like curves of the posts at each end. The top center panel depicts a Greek couple with cupids, playful imagery that complements the other panels below. The fading gold leaf trim around the top and outlining of the panel and rail add a touch of elegance.
The apron of the cabinet showcases an ivory inlay with an asymmetrical floral design, ornate yet symmetrical, enhancing the linear design of the piece. The front of the cabinet features three doors: the largest with a glass panel for displaying items inside, and the left and right panels each with an octagonal jasperware panel. The left panel depicts Nemesis, the goddess holding a chalice and dagger, while the right panel features Hebe, the goddess of youth, often associated with Aphrodite. These panels tell a story of love’s highs and lows, adding depth to the cabinet’s historical narrative.
Each panel is framed with a lighter calamander wood inlay, matching the trim and enhancing the overall design. The three original locks are functional, and the piece includes its key. The cabinet has three shelf levels with identical measurements.
This exquisite cabinet, rare and rich in history, is an ideal acquisition for collectors who appreciate Regency furniture design. Its timeless elegance makes it a cherished addition to any living area, bedroom, or office.
