Description
Early 1900’s 18-inch Williams-Pridham Index Globe. Beautiful floor globe from the Williams-Pridham Index Globe Company of Los Angeles, California. Printed color paper over plaster. It is fascinating how countries and cities have changed their names over time and this rare globe shows exactly that. In the globe, you can see that what today is Iran was once Persia. As well as today’s Russia and other northern Eurasia countries were known as the Union of the Socialist Soviet Republics which lasted from 1922 to 1991.
This 18-inch terrestrial index floor globe is made up of twelve chromolithographed metal gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the steel meridian graduated in degrees. Essentially, the zodiac is a ecliptic coordinate system, which takes the ecliptic as the origin of latitude and the position of the sun at vernal equinox as the origin of longitude. Has four quadrants supporting a horizon band with engraved paper calendar and zodiac. Signed with a circular printed cartouche: “18 INCH/ Williams-Pridham/ INDEX GLOBE/ COMPANY/ Los Angeles/ CALIFORNIA”. With a unique feature of an index of place names and locations printed on a continuous roll of paper set within the globe, turned by a round knob set through the south pole, and viewable within two rectangular windows fitted with clear magnifying glasses, each approximately 1 x 3 inches, set in the globe on opposite sides in ocean areas. Raised on a mahogany regency style stand with saber legs ending in brass paw feet. This globe would be perfect for anyone who loves geography and history.
