Circa Mid 19th Century Pair of Marine attributed to William Calcott Knell Oil on Canvas. William Calcott Knell is a painter of marine and sea life. He was inspired by his father, William Adolphus Knell, and took part in numerous exhibitions. The strengths of the sea, in its fury, is well represented in his works. The sailers are seen aerially. The coast take turns in the sea lane with the early vapor boats that came from the rising technology, where the man tries to dominate the events. A great number of his paintings are dedicated to the plumbeous sky, to the multitude of clouds and to the waves. After the mid-1800s, he improved his technique. The artist depicted his seas more transparent while maintaining his pictorial style.
